I know many people think it's a waste of space, and Windows 7 does away with it altogether and just lets the gadgets float on your desktop wherever you want them something you can already do with individual gadgets in Vista by detaching them from the sidebar.
But whether they're lined up neatly down the side of my desktop in a bar or scattered around, I think gadgets are cool and useful. Many folks don't like a "busy" desktop, but it works nicely for me. I like having everything I need at my fingertips -- as long as it's all neatly arranged.
Note that this is a inch monitor, and I have a three-monitor array inch monitors on either side , so I have plenty of screen real estate to work with. Ed Bott recently shared his favorite gadgets with us in his blog, but while I agree with Ed that most not all of the gadgets Microsoft included in Vista are not very exciting, my favorites except for one are different from his. Of course, your favorites may not be the same as mine or Ed's, depending on how you use your computer and what information you like to have at your fingertips.
But in this article, I'll show you the ones I find myself using most. Note: This information is also available as a PDF download and as a photo gallery. For a long time, I used the calendar application included with Vista which you can see in Figure A, third from the top. The calendar is probably the gadget I use most often because I work with many deadlines and I like having the whole month right there in front of me so I can quickly see, for instance, what day of the week the 19th is when someone asks me whether I can meet that day.
You can set two cities and switch between them with a click on the lower-right icon. If you click the icon that looks like a radar, you see a radar map. Or you can click the globe icon and see the time difference and distance between your two locations, as well as their locations on a world map. You can download the Area Code gadget here. Click the left and right arrows to see what the moon phases were last month or what they're going to be next month. Devesa 0.
Have you tried to make the comment in the thread "Have you a comment on Windows 7RC? Best regards, W7 RC x64 running I have made my thoughts somewhat politely known to Microsoft in the apropreate fora. I'll make do with Sunbird for now unless Microsoft reverses its decision. I am using windows mail and windows calendar in Windows 7 rc just fine.
Mail at least. Getting the "maito" to work was a little harder, but it works. Wish I could figure out how to get calendar reminders to work. Any hints? Edited by ron. Thursday, May 21, AM.
If you have Vista installed dual boot you can access and use the Vista Calendar in Windows 7. Find the app and pin to Start Menu.
Hope this helps some one looking for a replacement. Tuesday, August 25, PM. Well, but zCalendar. Vista Calendar however, does this. So that's why it is only a very basic replacement. Although this one is not a MS programme, I found "Calimanjaro" being a perfect alternative. It even looks like the twin of the Vista Calendar, although it has already been released back in as an update of even earlier programmes Yagoon and Time Calendar. Wonder who copied what Try it out, but keep in mind that the original calimanjaro.
Additionally, what is particularily good for use in restricted office environments is that this programme does not require admin rights to install and can even be run from an USB-stick.
I tested this out for years in more and more restrictive environments and it worked all the way through leading to a massive improvement in time management between my wife and me :- Hope this helps, too - although it is maybe a bit off-MS-topic.
